Brookland Place

Brookland Place

2021, Ireland

Student accommodation that acts as both a public space and a new connection between the campus and the city. It reanimates what was once an enclosed stretch of Pearse Street, bringing fresh energy and accessibility to the area.

The design evokes the form of a solid granite mass, featuring a distinctive, gently undulating stone roof. From a distance, the structure mirrors the nearby mountain landscape to the south, while up close it relates to the more familiar pattern of traditional Georgian rooftops. Its material palette reinforces this dialogue—board-marked concrete forms a sturdy plinth, supporting the granite-clad upper levels. The stepped courtyard provides glimpses into the lower basement levels, creating visual depth and movement within the composition.

Brookland Place bridges the gap between modern and historic architecture, integrating contemporary forms with the surrounding fabric. The building lowers toward the adjoining Printing House, establishing a more intimate scale. Its solid, windowless gables appear as sculpted planes that echo the classical geometry of the Printing House, situating it naturally within a textured, stone-like landscape. This thoughtful approach ensures the building holds its presence in key sightlines from New Square and the Berkeley Library steps.
